Personnel: Uncle Dave Lewis (vocals, guitar, saxophone, keyboards, drums); Tim Schwallie (vocals, guitar); Nolan Benz (vocals); Todd Cheek (guitar); Todd Witt (drums). Recording information: Emergency Hospital (12/??/1979-09/09/1982); Group Effort Sound Studio (12/??/1979-09/09/1982); Scott The Jew's Studio, West Palm Beach, FL (12/??/1979-09/09/1982). Photographer: Doug Falsetti. Unknown Contributor Roles: Tim Benz; Mike Stewart . Hospital's visibility outside its home state was limited. Though the Cincinnati-based label had releases charted in Sweden, reviewed in Trouser Press, and distributed by Rough Trade, the amount of exposure it received remained miniscule when compared to that of Akron's Devo and Cleveland's Pere Ubu and Dead Boys. At home, Hospital's loose collective of interlocking bands was met with resistance and bafflement, which probably wasn't the least bit unexpected. If concurrent movements in New York and London were provoking contempt and violence, a conservative Midwest city would certainly be no more accommodating. Auto Glamour Sound, originally a double-7" compilation released in 1982, is expanded here to a 23-track CD, with detailed liner notes from label co-founder Uncle Dave Lewis (who was also in all but two of the bands), and it should be a revelation to fetishists of English post-punk labels like Fetish, Fast, Industrial, Ron Johnson, and even the deconstructionist streaks running through early 4AD (Rema Rema, In Camera) and Factory (Crawling Chaos, Blurt). Like their overseas contemporaries, the Hospital bands disdained the bloated rock and slick pop that mainstream culture was continuing to embrace, and they might've also found punk to be too indebted to traditional rock & roll. They favored ideas over musicianship, unsettling noise over pleasant melodies, and raw spirit over calculated craft. While there's no mistaking some fleeting resemblances to some of the era's leading far-left-of-center lights -- Cabaret Voltaire, 8 Eyed Spy, PiL, James Chance -- it's never apparent that any mimicry was in effect, and regional references and characteristics are consistent parts of the puzzle. Equally remarkable is that, despite so much shared membership, no two groups sound alike. Dementia Precox's "Mines" is brutalist post-punk played by decayed machines that produce splashing percussion, obstinate bass vamps, and freak-show vocals ("James smiles, Jane takes her clothes off/Meanwhile, Molly has to hose off/Mines, mines, mines!"). Cointelpro's "Jerilyn" screeches, rumbles, and advises its subject that she "shoulda gone to Northgate Mall." Teddy & the Frat Girls' "I Owe It to the Girls," covered in 2004 by the Soft Pink Truth, is a cavewoman stomp about frustration that detonates at the end. And, if Romeo Void had been forced to play "Never Say Never" in a bar for 24 hours straight, the song might've wound up resembling 11,000 Switches' lurching and leering "Drinking Elvis Wine." When the songs don't thrill (which isn't often), they at least confuse or disorient. They all add up to a disc that functions as one of the best volumes of Killed by Death's Messthetics series in all but name and geographic origin. ~ Andy Kellman
