Audio Remixer: Mathias Schaffhauser.
There aren't many techno artists who can claim a truly distinctive personal sound, but producer, remixer, and Ware label head Mathias Schaffhauser has managed to develop one and it's in full effect on this weird but wonderful collection of recent remixes. All are quite long (average track length is about eight and a half minutes) and most feature Schaffhauser's signature blend of clicks, microscopic glitches, and bass parts that sound like something you'd hear while sitting at the bottom of a swimming pool. The total feeling is simultaneously spacious and slightly claustrophobic, with a seemingly infinite number of sonic layers and a huge timbral range. There is rarely anything like progression in Schaffhauser's sound, just gradual accretion. And it goes without saying that his taste in artists and tracks is impeccable: Gunne's "The Awakening" is a creepily funky song made shiveringly creepier by Schaffhauser's cold, impersonal mix; Nooncat's "Yoji" is an exuberant instrumental that features percussion instruments flying around wildly in the mix alongside subtly hooky scraps of vocal; M2's "M2 02.02" is a curious but intriguing slice of dancefloor feminism; and Breger's "Deine Therapie" pairs strange spoken vocals with an oddly generic-sounding mix. Not every track here is equally compelling, but every one is worth hearing and some are revelatory. ~ Rick Anderson
