Among headbangers, the Wacken Open Air Festival (held annually in Wacken, Germany) inspires the type of excitement that people in other areas of music feel for the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Chicago Blues Festival, or the Philadelphia Folk Festival. In other words, Wacken Open Air is a big deal in the metal world just as Montreux is a big deal among jazz enthusiasts and the Philadelphia Folk Festival is a big deal if one is seriously into folk. And whenever Wacken Open Air takes place, it's a safe bet that some bands will be doing some recording and/or filming for a live release. A Savage Symphony: The History of Annihilation documents Destruction's appearance at Wacken Open Air 2007; they performed on August 4, which was the last day of the four-day event. There was a diverse lineup on August 4, 2007 -- the metalheads in attendance heard everything from 1349's black metal to Cannibal Corpse's grindcore to In Flames' melodic death metal to Type O Negative's alternative metal -- and Destruction brought a solid dose of thrash to the stage. As A Savage Symphony: The History of Annihilation demonstrates, Destruction's Wacken set was fairly predictable but was predictable in an enjoyably invigorating way. A Savage Symphony doesn't offer a lot of surprises, but Destruction keep the energy and passion flowing during a set that includes some old '80s favorites ("Live Without Sense," "Curse the Gods," "Bestial Invasion," "Mad Butcher") as well as more recent songs they unveiled in the 2000s ("The Alliance of Hellhoundz," "Thrash Till Death," "Nailed to the Cross"). And when one hears Destruction's 2000s songs alongside their '80s songs, it is obvious that despite many lineup changes, they haven't changed much along the way. But again, the fact that Destruction are fairly predictable doesn't make them any less inspired on-stage -- and this DVD is an exhilarating document of their appearance at Wacken Open Air 2007. ~ Alex Henderson
