1729年に書かれた風刺劇「ベガーズ・オペラ」は当時のロンドンで大人気を博し、これまでイギリスで隆盛を極めていたイタリアオペラの衰退する原因にもなった作品です。また、以降のイギリスの全ての喜劇（ギルバート＆サリヴァンなど）から現代のミュージカルに強い影響を与え、現在でも絶大な人気を誇っています。さて、この「ポリー」ですが、音楽はとても優雅ですが内容は過激。西インド諸島が舞台となり、マクヒースは海賊になり、トレイプス夫人は奴隷売買業をはじめ、ポリーをだまし金持ちのダカット氏に売り飛ばしてしまいます。彼女は少年に変装して脱出、最後はカリブ首長の息子と結婚します。最初はベガーズ・オペラと同じくペープシュが曲を付けましたが、あまりにも政治的な風刺が強すぎて、当時の首相から上演禁止の圧力がかかりお蔵入りになってしまいました。その50年後にサミュエル・アーノルド（1740-1802）がスコアを一新し、ようやく上演されたというものです。何も知らずにこの曲を聴いていると、優雅なバロックの歌劇にも聞こえますが、内容はかなり過激です。
