Personnel includes: Chet Baker (trumpet); Rene Thomas (guitar); Clauco Masetti, Franco Cerri, Gianni Cazzola. This compilation features Chet Baker with four different rhythm sections in excerpts from various live dates supposedly taped between 1962 and 1971 (though personnel lists are given track by track, recording dates are not), none of which seem to have been released as complete live CDs in their own right. Baker's rapid-fire take of "Milestones" likely comes from a circa-1962 engagement, as the rhythm section is identical to the one on his CD Chet Is Back! "Deep in a Dream," featuring Baker on both vocals and trumpet, seems to come from 1977, as the three listed supporting musicians all recorded with him on the Italian LP The Incredible Chet Baker Plays and Sings in that year; however, Jacques Pelzer is heard on flute (not alto sax as listed) and the unidentified pianist is likely Bruce Thomas. Pianist Phil Markowitz (whose name is misspelled Markovitz) joins the trumpeter for a long workout of the ballad "Once Upon a Summertime"; since he only worked with Baker during 1978, this seems like the proper year for this track. A pianoless quartet is heard on the last four tracks. Alto saxophonist Bob Mover is clearly having problems with reed squeaking in Baker's "Mister B.," though bassist Larry Ridley saves the day with a splendid solo. Baker's faltering solos in "Stella By Starlight" and "Witchcraft" makes them hard to enjoy. The uneven nature of this CD makes it difficult to strongly recommend. ~ Ken Dryden
