Instead of relying solely on the Runaways' music, the soundtrack for the 2010 silver screen adaptation of the band's story splits the difference between the group's contemporaries (David Bowie, Suzi Quatro, the Sex Pistols, and Nick Gilder, whose great "Roxy Roller" kicks off the proceedings) and the group itself, either via original recordings or new cuts with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart standing in for Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, respectively. It's an effective gambit and goes a long way toward conjuring the sleazy post-glam, pre-punk netherworld of the Runaways, creating a context for their heavy guitar grind. Impressively, the Fanning/Stewart-led recordings more than hold their own with the original Runaways recordings -- they don't plod, they snarl, and they're certainly better than the re-recordings on Jett's near-simultaneously released Greatest Hits collection -- and they help goose The Runaways soundtrack toward being a cracking good time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
