ヘンデル（1685-1759）は晩年になって精力的にオラトリオを作曲しました。この「アレクサンダーの饗宴」もそんな中のひとつです。この作品は1736年ロンドンで初演された時、1300人もの観客が大興奮したというもので、1697年ドライデンが書いたアレクサンダー大王を讃える詩が元になっています。愛と戦い、そして祝宴。これらが見事に音で表現された華やかなオラトリオです。しかし現代では、その幕間に演奏された合奏協奏曲ばかりが有名で、本来のオラトリオが演奏されることはほとんどなくなってしまいました。初演時、ヘンデルは理想的なソプラノ歌手を得るためにイギリス中を探しまわり、結果、見つけたのはアンナ・マリア・ストラーダ（ルール・ブリタニアを作曲したトマス・アーンの未来の妻）で、彼女はこの公演の成功に大きく貢献しました。このアルバムには合奏協奏曲は含まれていませんが、その曲は8.550158で聴くことができます。
