Blackmore's Night features the talents of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and vocalist Candice Night. Blackmore is best known for his work with the rock band Rainbow, and before that, the legendary group Deep Purple. However he has long since been interested in medieval and Renaissance music.
On UNDER A VIOLET MOON, Blackmore and Night blend together acoustic pop with English medieval music. To add an air of authenticity, they employ such instruments as a hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, pennywhistles, and vintage tambourines. However, Blackmore's guitar is the backbone of this music, and he accompanies Night with unerring sensitivity. Night sings in a relaxed mezzo-soprano on each piece. Most of all, listeners will enjoy following the lyrics, since each tune is centered on an exciting medieval tale. Highlights include the war song "March the Heroes Home," the wistful "Castles and Dreams," and the forlorn "Catherine Howard's Fate." On the latter, Night sings of heartbreak, betrayal, and lovesickness. Even though this melody is antiquated, and the lyric is sung in Middle English, this story is wholly universal. UNDER A VIOLET MOON is the perfect album for those who wish to dabble in light, non-academic period music.
