Personnel: Louis Perry (dancer). Photographer: Peter Williams. The third volume in the Dancefloor Jazz series is just as strong, and in some ways stronger than, the preceding ones. This set, like the previous volumes, is a wide-ranging set of tracks that focuses on everything from bossa to jazz-funk (in small group and big-band formations), to soul-jazz, the more swinging side of easy, to early fusion. While few of these tracks are necessarily difficult to come by, it is wonderful to have them on a compilation as beautifully sequenced as this one -- owing in no small part to the cross-licensing ability of Universal, who owns all the labels these tunes were originally released on. While it may seem strange to consider the Isleys, Don Covay, and Bobby Byrd jazz artists -- simply because they aren't -- the individual tracks chosen (particularly the Isleys' "Work to Do," which sounds like it's being backed by the Ramsey Lewis Trio, fit nicely) work nicely. The latter two selections, "Obertime Man," and "Sayin' It and Doin' It Are Two Different Things" are, in fact arranged as jazz-funk tunes with vocals. (There are other, more bizarre funk oriented jams like David Ruffin's "Blood Donors Needed (Give All You Can)" and Dee Dee Barry's "Get Out of My Life, Woman" that feel truly odd on their own, but fit the roster of tracks wonderfully; since, after all, these are cuts for the club.) Other selections, such as Cal Tjader's "Samba Do Suenho," Marcos Valle's classic "Crickets Sing for Anamaria," and Tamba 4's "Samba Bim" are fantastic second generation bossa tunes. Roland Kirk's "Fallout" and Junior Mance's "Zabuda" are two of the hard soul-jazz numbers here, and James Last's "Happy Brasilia," touches on jazz and batacadua big-band style. Klaus Doldinger's "Fiesta" eventually erupts into a scorching Afro-Cuban-styled carnival tune. Mark Murphy's "Why and How" features him fronting the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band, and "Mathar" is the absolutely killer Volker Kriegel world jazz-fusion jam that has been burning up dancefloors since the '70s. In sum, this is a stellar compilation assembled with imagination and humor, as well as great taste. ~ Thom Jurek
