2009年の聖金曜日4月10日にバーミンガム・シンフォニー・ホールで行われた「英語歌唱によるマタイ受難曲全曲」のライヴ録音です。英語版のマタイと言えば、以前バーンスタインの演奏がありました（あちらは啓蒙的な意味も含め、まことに感動的な演奏でした）し、他にも1937年のクーセヴィツキと1979年のウィルコックスの録音もあります。しかし、こちらのマタイは、全く新しいテキストを用いて歌われているところに注目です。この合唱団に縁のあるニコラス・フィッシャーとジョン・ラッセルの2人が翻訳したテキストは、より時代に即した美しい英語が使われていて、現代人の心にまっすぐに届くマタイとして絶賛を浴びたものです。バロック・オーケストラによる味わい深い響きと、最近の傾向でもある早めのテンポ、そしてイーモン・ドーガンを始めとするおなじみの歌手たちによる素晴らしい演奏は、「マタイ受難曲」を味わい尽くした人にも、新しい感動を与えることでしょう。各々の演奏家によって違った祈りの言葉があるということを、しみじみ感じさせてくれるアルバムと言えそうです。
