4/13 is another in a series of bizarre releases by Olga Tanon, whose career went downhill after Una Nueva Mujer (2005), far and away her best album of the decade. Following the success of that album, she released a couple albums in association with Univision. The first, Soy Como Tu (2006), spawned a smash hit ballad, "Desilusioname," but was otherwise disappointing from a commercial standpoint, selling only half what its predecessor did. The second Univision album, Exitos en 2 Tiempos (2007), was downright puzzling in its mishmash of different styles and repetitious track selection (four different versions of "Hoy Quiero Confesarme," for instance). Meanwhile, Tanon's former label, Warner Music, flooded the market with greatest-hits collections, starting with 100% Merengue (2006), which to its credit was a welcome release, compiling the highlights of her peak period in the mid-'90s. Unfortunately, Warner didn't stop there, releasing a two-volume greatest-hits collection a few years later, 25 Exitos de Fuego (2009). As if this weren't enough, there was a two-volume live album, Fuego en Vivo (2008). Lost amid this torrent of product, much of it needless, were any new hits of significance beyond "Desilusioname." 4/13 is another in a series of bizarre releases (few of them sanctioned by Tanon), but at least it boasts some high-quality new studio material. Granted, there isn't much new studio material here -- a mere three songs, to be precise -- but they're among the best studio work Tanon has done in years. "Amor Entre Tres" is a salsa written in collaboration with Jorge Guzman, "Pasion Morena" is a merengue written in collaboration with Jose Luis Morin, and the best of the three, "Navidad Boricua," is a duet with Victoria Sanabria that is a celebration of both Christmas and modern-day technology (note the exuberant Facebook shout-out). There are also pop ballad versions of "Amor Entre Tres" and "Pasion Morena," the former of which is worthwhile. Curiously, all three of these songs were released digitally as singles by Tanon herself in what seems like a bid to take control of her recording career after the debacle with Univision and the endless Warner compilations. As for the physical release of 4/13, Tanon released it in association with Zamora Music Group (ZMG), a new boutique label founded by Latin industry veteran George Zamora. The physical release includes a five-track CD comprised of the aforementioned three songs and their versions. It also includes a DVD comprised of live footage of Tanon at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in Puerto Rico during her Evolution Tour. In fine form, she performs medleys of classic material from her early albums: "Me Cambio por Ella" and "No Te Das Cuenta" from Sola (1992); "Desesepedartamente Tuya," "Aun Pienso en Ti," and "Receta del Amor" from Siente el Amor... (1994); "Porque No Te Encontre," "Asi Es el Amor," and "Que Bailen los Ninos" from Llevame Contigo (1997); and the title track from Yo por Ti (2001). ~ Jason Birchmeier
