This is one crazy box set. Its subtitle boasts "100 smooth jazz classics on 5 CDs." But this is not "smooth jazz" from the genre. Instead, it is almost exclusively classic jazz made by legends. Would anyone dare to call Miles Davis' "Milestones" smooth jazz? How about Charles Mingus' reading of "Body and Soul" or Charlie Parker's "How Deep Is the Ocean?" Right. This box boasts everyone from Count Basie and Carmen McCrae to Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt with stops along the way for Hank Mobley, Lester Young, Red Garland, Mel Torme, Pat Martino, Art Pepper, Barbara Carroll, Jaki Byard, and David "Fathead" Newman. There are a few more contemporary artists, but none of them are from the smooth jazz camp. The box is cheap, its track selection is generous, but it's hard to imagine how they came up with the sequencing or the choices because it simply feels like a mish-mash of tracks.
