In 2008, pop-country duo Sugarland scored a surprise top 40 hit with a live version of the Dream Academy's 1985 psychedelic new wave smash "Life in a Northern Town" (released as a bonus track on the extended version of Sugarland's LOVE ON THE INSIDE album). Perhaps less surprisingly, the combo decided to quickly release a live album comprised largely of other left-of-center covers. The recording finds Sugarland performing before a barely-able-to-contain-itself audience, delivering the songs in grand arena rock-goes-country style. Among the interesting choice of material is a soaring, emotionally-charged take on Kings of Leon's "Sex on Fire," a bluegrass hoedown-style reading of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," a swampy version of the B-52's party classic "Love Shack," and two R.E.M. songs. Much to delight of the enthusiastic, eager-to-sing-along crowd, the group also tackles a few of its own chart-toppers, including "Stay" and "All I Want To Do." Throughout, Sugarland reveals the secret behind its blockbuster popularity, working the crowd like seasoned pros while keeping the energy level and twang factor both on 11.
