20世紀の最も華麗な指揮者、ストコフスキーは1882年ロンドンで、ポーランド人の父とアイルランド人の母との間に生まれた。13歳でロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・ミュージックに入学を許可され、後にはオクスフォード、クイーンズ・カレッジでも学び天才ぶりを発揮。1908年パリで指揮者デビュー、翌年から3年間シンシナティSOを指揮した後、1912年、フィラデルフィアOの音楽監督に就任、25年の長期間の関係でオーケストラと自身の世界的な評価を確立。1915年にはUSの市民権獲得。コンテンポラリーな作品を積極的に採り上げ、シェーンベルク、ショスタコーヴィチ、マーラーラフマニノフ、シベリウス、ストラヴィンスキーの世界／US初演は数多い。ハリウッド映画にも「The Big Broadcast」、「オーケストラの少女」、「ファンタジア」に出演、ハリウッドのWalk of Fameにも顕彰されている。キャピトル録音の3トラック・ステレオ・テープを使用して話題となった名録音の集大成であり、されにUAのSymphony of the Airの音源も収録。 ［コメント提供；EMIミュージック・ジャパン］
