The man who kept Count Basie's band swinging for five decades, the rhythm guitarist Freddie Green, is felt rather than heard on this freewheeling mid-1950s set, where he's joined by the drummer Jo Jones and the bassist Milt Hinton in providing a buoyant rhythm for a variety of nicely arranged small group charts, including the swinging "Up in the Blues," "Something's Gotta Give," and the after-hours "Little Red."
