全米チャート初登場4位を記録した『Sky Blue Sky』以来、約2年ぶり/通算7枚目のオリジナル・アルバムとなる今作は、前作でエンジニアを担当していたジム・スコットを共同プロデューサーに起用。 「Wilco the Song」といったバンド名を冠したトラックが収録されている他「You and I」では、iPodのCMに使用された「1234」が世界的ヒットとなった女性シンガーソングライター:ファイストとフロントマンのジェフ・トゥイーディーのデュエット曲などが収録されている。

２年ぶりの新作は満を持してのセルフ・タイトル。ゲストにファイストを迎えつつ、サウンドにはウィルコのエッセンスが凝縮されている。一見、シンプルに見えながら、細やかに計算された音響とアンサンブルの完成度はさすが。どの音ひとつとってもムダはなく、だからといって息苦しさを感じさせることもなく、すべての音がオーガニックに結びついている。知的でありながら、バンドとしてのダイナミズムを感じさせる本作は、聴くほどに耳にフィットしてくる魔法のアルバムだ。うっとりするほどメロウで、ゾクゾクするほどスリリング！
