East Londoner Nick Saloman hovered on the periphery of England's psychedelic/progressive music scene for over a decade and a half before making his debut as The Bevis Frond (of which Saloman is the lone member) with 1987's aptly-titled MIASMA. Since then, Saloman has released an astonishing (verging on ridiculous) amount of music while simultaneously publishing the celebrated PTOLEMAIC TERRASCOPE 'zine.
SON OF WALTER is Saloman's 15th album, not counting side projects! Unlike some of the Bevis Frond's more uneven earlier releases, the album hits an early high with "Beautiful Sister," easily one of Saloman's finest, and continues in a similarly rich vein for the next hour, alternating between ripping freak-beat, space rock, and lovely, folky tunes. It's unlikely that any but the most thoroughly obsessive will fully embrace the Bevis Frond oeuvre, but SON OF WALTER is a wonderful introduction. If you like this one, do scout out a copy of 1991's NEW RIVER HEAD next.
