For fans of the cello, this 2009 six-disc set contains the creme-de-la-creme of the instrument's repertoire and performers. Conveniently grouped by era, it begins with complete performances of three of Bach's Suites for solo cello and ends with excerpts from Tavener's The Protecting Veil and Gubaidulina's The Canticle of the Sun. In between are movements from the best-known concertos by Haydn, Dvorak, Saint-Saens, Elgar, Barber, and more; and from sonatas by Boccherini, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Shostakovich, with the complete Sonata No. 5 by Beethoven, played by the legendary Jacqueline du Pre. Broadening the variety are Saint-Saens' well-loved The Swan, Bruch's Kol Nidrei, and an arrangement of Piazzolla's Adios Nonino, plus an entire disc of showpieces and favorite encores. The one disappointment is that some of the tracks are not even complete movements, which is bothersome when the major part of a track is the orchestral opening of a concerto and the soloist is barely heard at all. Anyone looking to learn who's who in the cello world need look no further. EMI has culled performances by the 20th century's greatest cellists from its archive: Pablo Casals, Paul Tortelier, du Pre, Mstislav Rostropovich, Janos Starker, Pierre Fournier. Other talented artists include Julian Lloyd Webber, Steven Isserlis, Truls Mork, and the rising stars of the late 20th century Han-Na Chang, Natalie Clein, and Gautier Capucon. Given recording dates ranging from the 1950s (including a few mono tracks) to the 2000s, the sound quality varies from performance to performance, but is generally good, if not excellent. The Best Cello 100 delivers on the title's promise and is recommended for casual fans of and those just getting to know the instrument.
