If You Know What's Good For Ya ! !

The 1980s continue to fascinate the current batch of alt-rock whippersnappers, for better and sometimes for worse. Woolfy's particular take on the tradition focuses on late disco, middle-period new wave, and jagged, queasy Gang of Four-style funk, and those influences come together in always interesting and mostly pretty successful ways. "The Warehouse" is funky in a blocky, old-school hip-hop sort of way and features the kind of vocoder sound you might hear from Kraftwerk after a particularly hard night of drinking; it also features anhedonic vocals of a kind that Grace Jones would have killed for. On several tracks the band's sound explicitly evokes the Cure -- quite effectively on "Oh Missy," and really beautifully on the dubbed-up "Two Far Gone." "That Lady" combines disco claps, cowbell, and a chicken-scratch guitar to create a groove that you'll hate yourself for loving, while "Odyssey" pretty much writes the book on dark disco and "Sonic Monday" sounds like Joy Division, only less tuneful (which is kind of a scary thought when you consider it). "Hesitation" is especially fun, with its vintage funk groove and its dubwise interlude toward the end. Missteps are few: the dreary instrumental "Loa the Disco," the curiously subdued Carlos Hernandez remix of "Two Far Gone." In general, If You Know What's Good for Ya!! is lots of good, trashy fun, regardless of whether or not the band's intentions are ironic. ~ Rick Anderson|

西海岸ユル・ディスコの拠点、ロングからまたユル～いのが来ちゃったよ!　かつてガイダンスでプロジェクションズとして活動していたサイモン・ジェイムスがこのウルフィーの正体。ラプチャーばりの切迫ニューウェイヴ・ディスコ“Oh Missy”はまだヤル気があるほうだが、全体は70年代ロック～ニューウェイヴとバレアリック・ディスコが昼間から一杯引っ掛けながら長風呂を決め込んだような湯加減で……最高なんだな。
