This 1956 RCA release features Coleman Hawkins accompanied by a lush string orchestra, except on four big band-accompanied selections. The music is stimulating, if only because of the grandiosity of the arrangements. Flowery and elaborate, Byers and his orchestra complement Hawk's raspy tone with contrasting legato string movements. The overarching smooth quality of the orchestra renders standards such as "Body & Soul," "Have You Met Miss Jones" and "There Will Never Be Another You" quite lovely. Hawkins is inspired on all these pieces. His sharp phrasing and keen improvisational skill blend especially well with the big band selections, such as "I'm Shooting High," and his own composition, "The Bean Stalks." Pianist Hank Jones and bassist Milt Hinton add to this release's charm.
