Da Lench Mob: Maulkie, T-Bone, Shorty (vocals).
Additional personnel: Dr. Jam (vocals); 88 X Unit, Stan "The Guitarman" Jones, Clint Sands (guitar); Dee "Dirty Muggs" James (guitar, keyboards); Mike Simms (guitar, bass); Darryl Fisher (piano, keyboards); QDIII (keyboards); Anthony Johnson (mini Moog); Bootsy Collins (bass); DJ Inz (scratches), T. Harris, A. Harris, P. Phillips, M. Malton, Reggae Ragamuffin Stylist "Shankai" (background vocals).
Producers include: Ice Cube, Mr. Woody, Madness 4 Real, Dr. Jam, X Unit.
Other rappers turn to science fiction, horror movies and cartoons for inspiration, but Ice Cube proteges Da Lench Mob remain up to their necks in the trenches of revolution. Rodney King looming large in their minds, they kill a cop (apparently) in a brief interlude called "Who Is It" and do a couple years in the joint only to come out "bigger" in "Planet Of Da Apes." Finally they promise an apocalyptic nationwide riot to avenge King in "Final Call." They're gangstas out to protect a cultural agenda, not just local turf.
As if their supplies are under ration for the coming revolution, Ice Cube and his fellow producers surround Da Lench Mob with minimal, bass-heavy beats. It's the accents that give them their power--a bleating horn swimming through "King Of The Jungle," a chicken-scratch guitar in the P-Funk flavored "Chocolate City," a great wah-wah guitar line snaking with a menacing deliberateness around the title song. The band's raps are deliberate, too-slow, carefully enunciated lines that suggest the rappers are as concerned with being understood as they are with revolting. Even when they break for a party on "Mellow Madness," they keep the attack spare and controlled, knowing full well that funk comes not from speed or production, but from the spirit.

Rap Pages - 6 - "...Da Lench Mob continue to bring rec and lyrical havoc all over L.A.'s concrete jungle, comin' with that boom, ping, ping style. Doused end to end with drop-dead funk and in-your-face militant stance..." Option - "...Although many of the songs are encompassed by easygoing soul and funk rhythms, the messages seethe with a powerful intensity....it's a jungle out there and Da Lench Mob wants you to know that the brothas are swinging from vine to vine, packin' a nine..." Q - 3 stars - Excellent - "...An occasionally jaunty, up-beat affair....While the groovification of hip hop has resulted in an overbearing genre-sameyness, this album scores points back with genuine whispered menace and...a dash of irony..."
