エルヴィス・コステロとの共作『The River In Reverse』以来3年ぶりとなるアラン・トゥーサンの新作。プロデュースは前作と同様にジョー・ヘンリーが手掛け、エリントン、モンク、ジャンゴらのスタンダード曲をノスタルジックな哀感漂うニューオーリンズ・ジャズにアレンジしていく。ディープ・サウスの夜、その闇の深さを照らす街の灯や歓楽街のざわめきまでが伝わってくるような素晴らしいインスト作品だ。

酸いも甘いも知り尽くしたトゥーサンが今作で取り上げたのはニューオーリンズが育んだジャズだ。もうニューオーリンズの“匂い”と言うしかない独特の雰囲気が全編で漂っている。タイトルとなったセロニアス・モンクの《ブライト・ミシシッピー》のラグタイム感やブラッド・メルドーがゲスト参加しているジェリー・ロール・モートン《ウィニン・ボーイ・ブルース》のフレーズ、その“匂い”は隅々まで充満している。これはプロディースしたジョー・ヘンリーの手腕か？それともトゥーサンだからなせる技か？とにかく百聞は一見にしかず。この素晴らしき空気を体感して欲しい。
