"Diva" is a term that was originally applied to female opera singers, and is derived from the Latin word for "God." It's used to convey imperiousness, extraordinary talent, and sometimes a prima donna-style regality. VH1 has loosened the notion up a bit, to apply not only to female vocalists who've achieved iconic status (Tina Turner, Whitney Houston) but to younger singers who've risen to the top of their respective genres (Faith Hill, Leann Rimes). As defined by VH1, the term applies to any female singer who can be identified simply by her first name. The network's "Divas Live" program brings together a wide variety of these artists, and the stylistic variations work well in that each performer complements the other. Honorary male diva Elton John belts it out with Cher and Tina Turner on CCR's venerable "Proud Mary." Young R&B singer Brandy meshes effectively with country siren Faith Hill on "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You." On the finale, an impressive bevy of performers (Houston, Chaka Khan, Hill, Brandy, Rimes, and Mary J. Blige) bands together for an unfettered version of the modern-day feminist anthem "I'm Every Woman," a simultaneous celebration of the singers' shared sisterhood and individual artistry.
