Recorded when she was just 15, JANIS IAN is a classic folk-rock protest album that casts the teenage singer-songwriter as a young Dylan with the expressive, mature delivery of Judy Collins. While the then-controversial "Society's Child" seems slightly melodramatic and dated, the rest of the songs hold up surprisingly well over time, and deserve a fresh listen. Complex emotions are aired with great vocal acuity on the freewheeling, heartbreaking "I'll Give You a Stone if You Throw It", and the proud, angular "Pro-Girl" sounds like a Jefferson Airplane album track.|
