Johnny Hodges, one of Duke Ellington's best-known right-hand men, took a hiatus from the Duke's orchestra in the mid-1950s. USED TO BE DUKE was recorded during this time, and contains all the smooth alto saxophone magic for which Hodges is known. Flanked by a fine group of musicians and a four-strong horn line-up (including, interestingly, John Coltrane), Hodges plays it relatively straight, treating standards and originals with his characteristic warmth. There's plenty of swing and sweet melodic playing here, and the 2009 reissue, which features bonus tracks, will delight any Hodges fan.|
