Director: Michelle Barbieri. Originally released in 1973, Gato Barbieri's second album for Impulse! Records continued the Argentinean saxophonist's at the time groundbreaking fusion of modern jazz (sometimes verging on free experimentalism) and Latin American folk forms. Latin jazz was by no means a new concept in 1973, of course--it had begun as a genre in the 1940s--but these six tracks flipped the script, letting the Latin forms take precedence over the jazz influences, creating hypnotic percussion-driven grooves for Barberi to solo over. Barbieri's political sense, heard more clearly on projects like Charlie Haden's LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, is subtly put across as well.
