After two superb albums, it's perhaps inevitable that Ojos de Brujo can't quite keep up the magnificence. After expanding their horizons to great effect with Techari, they try the same trick again on Aocana, although it doesn't work as well, because most of the material isn't as strong. With the exception of "Donde Te Has Metio," the songwriting is quite mediocre, most of the tracks dragging at mid-pace. A flurry of guests doesn't help, as the band steps back from the trailblazing they'd done so well in the past. "Tantas Flores" brings them closer to the true heart of flamenco, but Abad's fairly emotionless vocals ultimately let them down. It's not a disaster, but more a holding pattern that doesn't find them making any real progress. ~ Chris Nickson

バルセロナから生まれた地中海的ハイブリッド・サウンド。フラメンコをベースとしながらも、ヒップホップ、ファンク、レゲエ、ラテンやインド音楽などの要素を大胆に取り入た、オホス・デ・プルッホ。セカンド・アルバム「バリ」('02)、そしてラテン・グラミー賞最優秀賞候補作のサード・アルバム「テチャリ」('06)が世界的にヒットし、バルセロナのアンダーグラウンド・シーンから一気にインターナショナルな存在へと飛躍を遂げている。"今"を意味するAOCANAというタイトルを冠した本作は、自身のレーベルDiguelaからリリース。

バルセロナのアンダーグラウンド・シーンから世界にその名を轟かせた『Techari』以来3年ぶり、ライヴ盤を挿んで久々に届いた新作はUSオルタナ風（?）のジャケとは裏腹に、これまでになくポップで洗練された出来映えとなった。ルーツであるフラメンコやジプシー音楽にヒップホップなどを混ぜたスタイルは変わらないものの、ホーンや鍵盤からはジャジー・フレイヴァーが溢れ、カホンやスクラッチはティンバランド風のポリリズムを刻み……と雑多なマテリアルが実に緻密かつ自然に溶け込んでいる。特にキューバン・サルサ界の大物、ロス・バン・バンを迎えたガロティン調のナンバーが良い出来。うわべだけをすくって〈ミクスチャー〉を知った気になっている輩は、本作を聴いて出直すべし!

いまや刺激的なサウンドの発信地として世界の音楽ファンが一目置いているスペインの都市バルセロナ。そのことをいちばん最初に認識させてくれたのが、このオホス・デ・ブルッホだった。スペインのお家芸であるフラメンコをベースに、サルサ、インド、アラブ、ヒップホップなどの要素を散りばめた鮮烈なサウンドのインパクトは、この新作でもまったく薄まっていない。ピアニストのチャノ・ドミンゲスや、キューバのパーカッション奏者オラシオ・エルナンデス、そしてロス・バン・バンといった超豪華ゲストを統率する貫禄にも恐れ入る。
