On WAVVES, his second album in a year (which also saw the release of a mix tape, two singles, and an EP), San Diego-based noise wunderkind Nathan Williams delivers another 14 tracks worth of fitfully compelling fuzzed-over noise pop. As on Williams's previous releases and Times New Viking's similar-sounding RIP IT OFF, there's strong evidence of smart, tight pop music beneath the layers of overdriven fuzz: "So Bored," "No Hope Kids," and "More Fur" each boasts huge, instantly appealing hooks worth straining to hear.
