Personnel: Mark "Slick" Aguilar (vocals, guitar); Paul Kantner (vocals, 12-string guitar, banjo); Diana Mangano (vocals). Audio Mixer: Bruce Marshall. Recording information: 06/17/2003. Director: Hank Lena. Paul Kantner has toured and recorded with various configurations since he resurrected the name Jefferson Starship in 1992. The quartet that played on June 17, 2003, at the Soiled Dove nightclub in Denver, CO, was one of the smaller ones, consisting only of Kantner on vocals and 12-string guitar, Diana Mangano on vocals, Slick Aguilar on electric guitar, and Chris Smith on keyboards. Although two of the three musicians played amplified instruments, it was a setup that would have qualified for VH1's old Unplugged series, as Kantner spent the 86-minute set seated, having chosen a set that leaned toward the softer songs in his and his band's repertoire. It was a good format for Kantner, an old folkie despite his lengthy rock & roll career. Songs like "Wooden Ships" and "Good Shepherd" from the Jefferson Airplane album Volunteers were well suited to the setting, as were Kantner's versions of Rosalie Sorrels' "Baby Tree" (from his solo album Blows Against the Empire) and the Weavers' "Aweigh, Santy Ano" with some extra lyrics. Mangano effectively stood in for Kantner's old partner Grace Slick, singing Slick songs like "White Rabbit," "Hyperdrive," "Be Young You," and "Somebody to Love," as well as Sandy Denny's "I'm a Dreamer." The set was well captured on video, giving a good sense of Kantner's mixture of his folk roots and his rock accomplishments, still evident in his early sixties. ~ William Ruhlmann
