ADVANCE BASE BATTERY LIFE collects tracks recorded by Owen Ashworth between 2004 and 2007, culled from splits and compilations. With its wide range of styles, and incongruous covers of tracks by Paul Simon ("Graceland") and Missy Elliott ("Hot Boyz"), you'd expect a hot mess. But the disc's very ramshackle nature makes it an ideal primer for Casiotone newcomers, because it hits on styles from all his albums, which are all equally quirky anyway. Highlights include "White Corolla" (with vocals by Jenny Herbinson), and "It's a Crime," which adds shades of bluegrass to Ashworth's usual downbeat keyboard melodies.
