　今年2月に発表された〈ブリット・アワード〉で、栄えある功労賞を受賞したペット・ショップ・ボーイズ。〈エレクトロ・ポップのアイコン〉として、その存在を改めて世に知らしめる格好となったわけだが、それも至極当然の結果。ここのところ〈エレクトロ〉をキーワードに音楽シーンはさまざまな国や分野で盛り上がりを見せ、ハウス、テクノ、ヒップホップなどダンス・ミュージックはもちろんのこと、ロックやポップスにおいてもいまや欠かせない要素になっているからだ。そんなエレクトロ標準装備な今日、その土壌を20年以上に渡って耕し続けてきた彼らが、ドンピシャなタイミングでニュー・アルバム『Yes』をリリースした。 　トレヴァー・ホーンとふたたびタッグを組んだ前作『Fundamental』（2006年）は、80'sディスコに回帰しつつも、全体を通してしっとりとした曲が並んでいたが、恒例の1ワードで付けられたタイトル『Yes』が指し示すように、今作はより前向きで開放感に満ち、とても爽快な仕上がりになっている。その立役者がアリーシャやカイリー・ミノーグとの仕事で名を馳せるプロデューサー・チーム、ゼノマニアだ。前作に見られた、たちまち20年前にタイムスリップさせてくれるレトロなサウンド・プロダクションやペット・ショップ・ボーイズらしい哀愁漂うメロディーに、最新モードへとアップデートされたトラックをプラス。歴史あるユニットがこれまでに熟成させてきた旨味と、止まらない好奇心を惜しげもなく披露し、このアルバムのなかに詰め込んでいる。それは、時に慈悲深く、時に無邪気に振る舞うニール・テナントのヴォーカル・パフォーマンスからも窺えるだろう。 　続々と登場するエレポップ系の新人。そのなかにはこなれたポップソングを書けるアーティストも確かに多いが、そんな若手よりもこの『Yes』のほうが断然初々しく聴こえるのはちょっとした驚異でもある。最後に毎度お馴染みジョニー・マーが参加していることも付け加えておきます（笑）。
