Given Pete Doherty's notorious knack for hard living, it's surprising enough that the British bad boy has managed to keep his post-Libertines band, Babyshambles, together, making the arrival of this 2009 solo album an even greater revelation. While a truly "solo" outing might have been an unhinged mess, Doherty (billed here as "Peter") gets top-notch assistance from some old pros--namely Blur guitarist Graham Coxon and uber-producer Stephen Street (both Blur and Babyshambles)--resulting in a laidback, largely acoustic set of tunes that often sounds likes the more subdued side of, well, Blur (see "Last of the English Roses"). Of course, Doherty's scrappy, melancholy sensibilities also keep the proceedings anchored in his own beleaguered aesthetic, allowing GRACE/WASTELANDS to be a point of entry for fans of all of the aforementioned acts.
