Since the 1980s drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts has been building his reputation as one of the best musicians in contemporary jazz, first as the drummer for Wynton Marsalis's band, then as a in-demand session player and a leader in his own right. WATTS, released in 2009, is Watts's fifth studio album as a leader, is one of his finest achievements. Watts proves himself an accomplished writer on 10 original compositions, mining the post-bop tradition without shying away from adventurous moves that bend the structure. But it's the line-up of talent that really dazzles here, with an all-star personnel that includes bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Terrence Blanchard, and saxophonist Branford Marsalis. There's plenty of scintillating group chemistry and individual stretching out throughout WATTS, all driven by the leader's fiercely swinging grooves.
