For her debut full-length on 4AD/XL, indie songstress Anni Rossi turned to Steve Albini to give her folk-tinged indie rock some sparkle. Providing a similar foundation for Rossi to what he offers, say, Nina Nastasia, Albini gives Rossi's compositions a crisp, organic luster that's especially effective in showcasing her use of the viola. Yet where Nastasia has a certain essential darkness to her approach, Rossi can be downright bubbly, occasionally gilding her intimate aesthetic with plucky keyboards and propulsive rhythms. It's when she's alone with only her voice and her viola, however, that Rossi truly stands as a unique talent.
