This is part of the Epic/Legacy Roots N' Blues series.
This 1992 compilation features cuts from the four albums Muddy cut for the CBS imprint Blue Sky between 1977 and 1980, after parting ways with Chess Records. Producer/guitarist Johnny Winter pulled the old fire out of Muddy, the kind of energy he'd generally been emitting only in live performance. Like its companion collection, KING OF THE ELECTRIC BLUES, this album cherry-picks the Blue Sky sessions, resulting in an anthology nearly as satisfying as any from his Chess days.
From the acoustic romp of "I Can't be Satisfied" to the randy live recording "Streamline Woman," Muddy and his band--egged on by Winter as both producer and guitarist--pound it out in grand style, as if their lives depended on it. On "I Feel Like Going Home," Muddy sounds like a timeless blues prophet dispensing the hard-won wisdom of the ages. But on "My Eyes Keep me in Trouble," he sounds every inch the cocky rake, eager to dive into bacchanalia at the first opportunity. When BLUES SKY closes with a number about "going down to Florida," you know Muddy's not talking about early retirement. He sounds ready to keep going as long as there's life in him. And that's exactly what he did.
