While he's a fine tenor saxophonist, it's as a jazz and pop arranger that Bill Holman is best known. Holman's earliest writing for orchestral jazz can be heard with Stan Kenton's early-to-mid-1950's band, and later on for the bands of Woody Herman and Count Basie. VIEW FROM THE SIDE (1995) presents Bill Holman's arrangements for his own band of mostly West Coast-based players. While not avant-garde, Holman's music is still dense and elaborate; he manages to pack a great deal of musical information within any given track. But the arranger's music is always engaging, and fans of creative large group jazz should check it out.
