A veteran of Chicago's underground jazz and experimental music scenes, coronetist Rob Mazurek has never been one to remain beholden to musical orthodoxy. His collaborations with Stereolab, Tortoise, and Gastr del Sol have effectively blurred the lines separating avant-jazz and post-rock, while his Isotope 217 project was a forward-looking fusion of jazz and electronica. For SOUND IS, Mazurek is joined by members of Tortoise, Isotope 217, and Town & Country on a set of 14 original compositions that, despite their relative reliance on organic instrumentation, embrace and deconstruct seemingly disparate musical genres, while remaining compositionally coherent and consistently engaging.
