Trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith emerged from Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Music along with peers Leroy Jenkins and Roscoe Mitchell, and, in his way, Smith is one of the most uncompromising yet still accessible. Though he's an exponent of free jazz, Smith's approach is measured and lyrical, and he embraces many sides of the African and African-American musical experience--blues, reggae, African folk strains, and rhythm & blues, along with aspects of jazz before and after the '60s free movement. PROCESSION was originally released in 1983, and exudes spirituality flowing over and from subtly engaging grooves and rhythms.
