Born in the early '90s, Greensleeves' Ragga Ragga Ragga series has always had its finger on the pulse of the Jamaican music scene. With hits from the more popular side of contemporary reggae plus exciting club tracks that burned up the dancehall, this 2009 edition is no exception, but any recommendation should come with an "adults only" warning. Get past the serious street life tracks from Bounty Killer, Mavado, and Vybz Kartel, plus the sugary sweet, motivational anthem "Time to Shine" from Laden, and the rest of the highlights are shameless dance numbers that go from rated R to XXX. Veterans Beenie Man and T.O.K. are lustful on their top "pum pum" and "punany" mentioning tracks, but the fast and furious freshmen don't have time for such pleasantries. RDX's ridiculously over the top "Bend Over" has a thrusting grunt as its big hook while newcomer Bragga sings of a woman with a "Dagga Dat" tattoo featuring an arrow that points somewhere rather private. Granddaddy of all the sleaze is Aidonia's "Flying Dagger aka 100 Stab" which combines cartoonish, jaunty music with a truckload of foul lyrics. Just about a month before this set's release, Aidonia's massive JA hit -- along with the not included "Rampin' Shop" from Kartel -- drove the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica to ban all radio and television stations from airing songs with "daggering" content. Look for Ragga Ragga Ragga 2009 to be located behind the counter and have your I.D. ready. ~ David Jeffries|
