After 2006's TEN SILVER DROPS, indie rock outfit the Secret Machines replaced the departed vocalist and guitarist Ben Curtis with guitarist Phil Karnats, but fans worried about an overhaul in the band's sound will be pleased to know the Machines stay their course on this 2008 self-titled release. Like DROPS, THE SECRET MACHINES shows the influence of `60s psychedelia, post punk, and arena-sized, riff-ready alternative rock. For the most part, the album is dark, slow, and atmospheric, laying on thick helpings of sludgy drums, distorted guitar, and swirling feedback. Opener and lead single "Atomic Heels," one of the album's strongest tracks, adds pop hooks to its wall of guitars for a new-wave-flavored gem. Yet all of THE SECRET MACHINES slams and floats with the crafted impact fans of these experimental rockers have come to expect.

商品の紹介

Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Adding electronic gurgles to heavy, prog-rock power chords, THE SECRET MACHINES recalls Rush and Black Sabbath at the one end of the sonic spectrum and David Bowie's spazzier, punk-era edge at the other." Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "[T]hey haven't lost their touch for thunderous rhythms or layered producition..." -- Grade: B Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir old fervour remains intact....The proggier moments entrance, notably 'The Walls Are Starting To Crack'..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he NYC three-piece are a band playing to their strengths, namely epic slabs of feedback and deliciously subtle hooks that reveal themselves with time." Blender (Magazine) (pp.76-77) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "On 'Have I Run Out,' theatrical kettledrums and tense strings introduce a beautiful sense of dreamy anguish." Clash (Magazine) (p.99) - "[A] logical continuation from albums one and two....[A]n urgent, expansive follow-up."
