Although Ran Blake is primarily known for his own flinty compositions and improvisations, the New England-based pianist and educator has always had a soft spot for the standards as well, having first made his name in modern jazz circles with a 1959 album with singer Jeanne Lee that featured a sterling version of the classic "Laura." DRIFTWOODS is a solo piano album that consists entirely of standards ranging from "Strange Fruit" and "I Loves You Porgy" to Milton Nascimento's 'Cancao do Sol," performed in Blake's uniquely cerebral style.
