Walk Gently is a collection of early Hafler Trio works, many of which are previously unreleased. The first two tracks are from a 12" that originally appeared in 1985, and comprised the soundtrack to a film that existed in various versions. "Alternation, Perception & Resistance" was also released in a shorter version on Bag of Cats in 1989, but here the lecture that forms the base of the piece is recorded more clearly, and the range of accompanying environmental sounds is greater and more processed. The remaining eight tracks are probably unreleased, although the accompanying notes carry cryptic and possibly misleading information. Regardless of their provenance, they constitute a remarkable collection of drones and sonic experiments. "The Guard Bridge" is a quiet, high-pitched drone with crackles and pops, and sounds remarkably like Oval and other microsound and glitch electronic artists. "Plan I.E and "The Fifth Mantra" make heavy use of looped voices, and the other two pieces in "The Extracts" are static, white noise, and shimmering metallic drones. "Jenseits" and "Au Dela" (Beyond in German and French, respectively) both are intense loud drones with static and feedback, "Jenseits" concentrating on low-end buzzes and "Au Dela" on a loud whistle. The album closes with an uncharacteristic pop collage in layers and loops, with television and radio voices mixed in with the saxophones and guitars. ~ Caleb Deupree
