SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE, arguably Godflesh’s most straightforward album, finds the revered British industrial-metal ensemble trading in its drum machine for a real drummer, Bryan “Brain” Mantia (Praxis, Primus), who departed after this release. Human percussion aside, the 1996 record features singer/guitarist Justin Broadrick and company moving away from sheer blunt force and towards a more ferocious sound, as best evinced on the snarling “Hunter” and the searing “Amoral.” This 2009 reissue also includes the rhythm-heavy remix outing LOVE AND HATE IN DUB, and the IN ALL LANGUAGES DVD, which presents videos for classic Godflesh tracks such as “Christbait Rising” and “Mothra.”
