WHEN MACHINES EXCEED HUMAN INTELLIGENCE, the first full length from Harmonic 313, represents yet another product of prolific electro mastermind Mark Pritchard's multi-faceted talent. Harmonic 313 evolved out of Harmonic 33, Pritchard's collaboration with the like-minded producer Dave Brinkworth, but despite the similar name, it finds Pritchard exploring uncharted sonic territory. The album combines the synthetic textures and minimal aesthetic of early Detroit house music with the rhythms of golden-era hip-hop to often mesmerizing effect.

デイヴ・ブリンクワースとハーモニック33という名義でリリースしていたこともあったマーク・プリチャードが、ちょっと数字を変えたソロ・プロジェクトを始動。その昔のグローバル・コミュニケーションやリロード、ジェダイ・ナイツはもちろん、最近のトラブルマン名義のサウンドとも違ったエレクトロ～ヒップホップ寄りのスタイルを披露しています。ダブ・ステップの影響を受けたと思しきサグなベース音が敷き詰められていて、洗練されたサウンドを作ってきた彼のイメージも激変するでしょう。無数にある引き出しから熟練の手腕で素材を出し入れしつつ、新たな自分のテクノ式を構築した印象で、ヴィンテージ・シンセを使っているのか、音質の良さも特筆モノ。どこまでも玄人ウケするキケンなオヤジですわ。

幾つもの名義を使い分け、18年間に渡り革新的なプロダクションを残してきたマイク・プリチャードの新プロジェクト=ハーモニック313。といってもピンとこない人も多いかもしれないが、「〈元グローバル・コミュニケーションの」といえば…。エレクトロニック・ミュージックのあらゆる要素が交錯したこのアルバムは、ダブステップばりに重厚なブレイクビーツに始まり、エレクトロやヒップホップ、柔らかなシンセが印象的なテクノまでお目見えし、クラブ・シーンの歴史を凝縮したかのようで、マイクの貫禄を感じる作品だ。
