Personnel: Annea Lounatvuori (cello). One of the great ironies of modern dance music is that so much of it manages to take itself and its decadence so seriously. So when Bootsy Collins shows up early on in the program to Claude VonStroke's contribution to the Fabric label's DJ mix series, it's a very good sign indeed--no one can fail to dance better with those yelping exhortations echoing in his or her ears. Things do take something of a turn for the less human shortly afterwards, with Holger Ziske's robotic and vinegary "Mes Yeux," but even that track has a nicely subtle swing to it and it segues into the bracingly creepy "Big Onion (Joakim Slap On It Remix)" by Galaxius. Other highlights include the fun and lighthearted "Pilsnerd" by Xpansul & Daweed and Robag Whrume's "Guppipepitsche," an explicitly jazz-flavored track that quotes subtly from Thelonious Monk. On the less compelling side is Varislove's "Inside Ways (Boris Werner Remix)," which features a lovely string arrangement but otherwise offer little to hold onto your attention or push you onto the dancefloor. It's good to see VonStroke taking chances, though, and the weaker tracks end up making a nice whole with the stronger ones.
