Released the first week of 2009, Clubbers Guide 2009 is a 40-track double-disc mix of what Ministry of Sound expects to be some of the biggest dance hits of the year. Like previous volumes from years past, the album favors mainstream dance music -- generally house or progressive house with a bit of electro and trance as well -- and includes a lot of remixes, some of them rather obscure. Also like past volumes, the mixing is nothing special (more along the lines of cross fading than mixing per se). Clubbers Guide 2009 kicks off with one of the album highlights, the Crookers remix of Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Night," and follows with the Freemasons remix of Outsiders' "Keep This Fire Burning," which features U.K. house superstar vocalist Amanda Wilson of Freemasons fame. Elsewhere on the first disc, there are notable remixes of Guru Josh Project's "Infinity 2008," Basshunter's "I Miss You," and Sash!'s "Raindrops," while Wideboys, another U.K. house favorite, show up with a remix of September's "Can't Get Over." The second disc also starts out strongly with tracks by Pryda (i.e., Eric Prydz), Deadmau5, Steve Angello, and Laidback Luke. However, the second disc isn't as solid as the first and closes with a bunch of trance (Marco V, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Tiesto) that is liable to turn some listeners off. Though Clubbers Guide 2009 surely isn't going to please everyone, more experienced dance music listeners in particular, it's a good overview of mainstream dance music in the U.K. in 2009. ~ Jason Birchmeier
