商品の紹介

Alternative Press - "...The The have created a real tribute to the man who recorded some of the most intensely `heartfelt' songs ever in his short career. There's very little country or blues in The The's take on Williams, but they show that it's the song not the singer that makes the tune..." Q - 3 Stars - Good - "...A bold and listenable experiment that, in its liberties taken, honours the strength of those deathless songs." Entertainment Weekly - "...covering a disc's worth of Hank Williams songs, [Matt] Johnson internalizes Williams' '50s despair and coughs it up as modernist melancholy..." - Rating: B+

It is true that Matt Johnson offers some startingly original interpretations of Hank Williams songs on Hanky Panky -- he makes them sound like The The songs. That doesn't necessarily mean he's tapped into the essence of Williams' music, it means that he is a gifted arranger. Most of the song pulse to an electronic beat and the atmophere is thick with forboding doom. Strangely enough, it works better than several The The records, since Hank Williams is a better songwriter than Matt Johnson. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine|
