Tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman has consistently been one of the finest and most accessible jazz musicians of the `90s and `00s eras. And Redman refuses to limit himself to any single, narrow approach. For example, on COMPASS, he revisits the trio format that Sonny Rollins utilized on such classics as FREEDOM SUITE. Accompanied by just bass and drums (including the great Brian Blade), Redman stretches himself far more than on previous outings. His tenor is full-bodied and shiny like that of Rollins, but also deep, sleek, and quick-witted. On a few tracks, the saxophonist even doubles up his accompaniment, playing in front of two bassists and two drummers--sometimes they thunder, sometimes they engage in dialogues with their leader.

アコースティック・トリオによるサウンドを更に追求し、ダブル・リズム・セクション/ダブル・トリオ編成にも挑戦！更なる高みへと進むジョシュア・レッドマン。サックス、ベース、ドラムのシンプルなトリオ編成にてレコーディングした前作『バック・イースト』以来、2年ぶりとなる2009年作品。このシンプルかつ有機的な編成によるサウンドを更に前進させる為に、2008年3月からレコーディングを開始。その過程でジョシュアのアイデアにより、今作では通常のトリオ編成による演奏の他、ダブル・リズムセクション編成による演奏も試みた、更に新たな境地へ踏み出す1枚。

2008年もピアノレス・トリオでの小規模なツアーを継続していたジョシュア・レッドマンの新作は、ラリー・グレナディア＆ルーベン・ロジャースのベース陣とブライアン・ブレイド＆グレゴリー・ハッチンソンのドラム陣を擁したダブルトリオ作品。純粋に各トリオでの作品に加え、総勢５名のダブルトリオでの作品も数多く収録。ベートーヴェンの《月光》のジャズ・アレンジを除き、極めて私小説的でネクスト・レヴェルなコンテンポラリー・ジャズ作品。09年の先陣を切っての注目リリース。
