The solo project of Strokes bassist Nikolai Fraiture, Nickel Eye shares the New York City band's post-punk sensibility, but THE TIME OF THE ASSASSINS travels farther afield stylistically, ranging from the reggae-tinged "Brandy of the Damned" to a spare, faithful cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye." While Fraiture plays many of the instruments on the album, he's also backed by the British alt-rock group South, a top-notch ensemble that graciously cedes the spotlight to the singer/multi-instrumentalist. Fraiture is also join by a few of his N.Y.C. friends, vocalist Regina Spektor and guitarist Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), giving TIME the feel of a hip party being thrown by one of indie-rock's inner circle.
