Like much of the Would-Be-Goods' discography, EVENTYR is distinguished, well-mannered, and adroit. It almost feels like the predominant aesthetic here is old-school British--a sort of fogginess to their sound, a kind of stiff-upper-lip-ness or stereotypical soft-spokenness. EVENTYR is also styled in the dramatic, mysterious, 1960s-inspired pop that nods to the Left Banke, Mortimer, and the Turtles, ranging from baroque pop-inspired elegance ("In Bohemia") to jangly, C86-style pop ("Temporary Best Friend") to monologue-style songs that wouldn't be out of place in a cabaret ("Venusberg").
Cabaret is a good touchstone here, as the songs often seem like tableaux, with their own set of props and characters ("Venusberg", "In Bohemia", "Pleasure Island"). This stylized, theatrical feel is only accentuated by the numerous literary allusions ("Tin Heart" is a reference to Hans Christian Anderson's "Steadfast Tin Soldier"). At its best, this approach yields some languid, mysterious pop tunes. But it might have been nice if the Would-Be-Goods had focused on more songs in the vein of "Temporary Best Friend," which offers a refreshing departure from the theatrical material--it's by and large the best offering here, a perfect blend of shambly guitars and wry, melancholy vocals.
